The Meaning
of our Name
Lupesina
LUPESINA consists of two Samoan words:
LUPE = PIGEON/DOVE and
SINA = WHITE.
So when you put these two words together LUPESINA literally means WHITE PIGEON/DOVE.
Our Aoga was named LUPESINA because the Lupesina/white pigeon or dove symbolises perfectly our kaupapa, philosophy, values and belief.
The name Lupesina is significant in both the Samoan and Christian faith and it also possesses a lot of characteristics and strengths that we believe our Aoga draw on and encourages.
This following excerpt was taken from Rev Dr Featunai Liuaana’s speech for our Opening Ceremony in August 2010.
“O le Lupesina o le igoa o le lupe lanu paepae i Samoa...O le Lupesina o se igoa e tāua tele, ona o le vaitau lenei i Samoa mai le masina o Iuni e oo atu ia Setema, o le taimi e faaigoaina o le Oloamanu. (The Lupesina is the name of the white pigeon that can be found in Samoa...The Lupesina is of great importance in Samoa especially during the months of June to September as this is the time of the Oloamanu. The meaning of Oloamanu is the singing of birds, or the choir of birds. It is during this time that the flowers of plants are blossoming and blooming greatly and one of these flowers is the mosooi which has a very beautiful smelling flower whose aroma can travel far distances. The Lupesina is particularly fond of the fruits of the mosooi and so would lead and draw other birds to join it in eating the mosooi fruits, as well as to sing within its beautiful aroma. The Lupesina’s joy and happiness at being amongst the mosooi and other blossoming flowers is also what draws the birds to the same place. Hence, Lupesina Aoga Amata Preschool does the same.
...The Lupesina symbolises perfectly this building/Aoga that is being opened today, and our children should shout and sing with joy because their building/Aoga is completed. Lupesina Aoga Amata will continue to blossom and will provide a good and beautiful aroma that will surround and provide a blessed future of our children and their education journey. Lupesina believes that it is a place where many children can come and taste the sweet fruits of early childhood education and to also be a place where they will be cared for and would have fun, joy and happiness with others. By providing this care and nourishment our children would draw others to also come and join them in their cheerful singing.)

The Lupesina is of significance in Samoa as it shows a lot of leadership qualities with drawing other birds to a place of beauty, which is aromatic as well as nourishing. Also after, spending time in the blossoming flowers feasting on their fruits they would then be able to sustain themselves for whatever journey they may have ahead.
This is what we believe our Aoga provides for our children – a place where they can come and be happy, have fun, as well as be nourished with care and different learning opportunities and experiences. We believe that by offering them this service they will be provided with the skills and learning that they need to take them further not only on their education journey, but their journey in life.

Also for Samoa, lupesina is also the name of the best, whitest and cleanest ava/tugase that is presented to the Alii/High Chief during the ava ceremony – ie. ava lupesina.
Hence, our Aoga aims to provide the best quality facility, opportunities, experiences and interactions for our children to grow, learn and be empowered by. We see our children as our future leaders and want to offer them the best that we can so that they can make a difference in their families, communities, society and the wider world.
The spiritual meaning of a white pigeon to many represents Holiness, Purity, Wisdom, Peace and Love.
These are all qualities that we want to encourage in our children.
-
We encourage them to be secure in their faith and what they believe and to not be afraid to share this.
-
We want to ensure that their innocence is protected while strengthening them and helping them to develop a resilient spirit for any future challenges.
-
We will provide them with learning opportunities and experiences that will help them to make good and right choices and decisions
-
We will encourage positive social interaction and relationship building that will promote collaboration, cooperation and positive communication.
-
Love will direct and cover everything that we do and so we encourage our children to love themselves, love others and to love their place.

Other characteristics that the white pigeon has are that they are very strong flyers and will always find their way home.
We believe that Lupesina will prepare our children to be strong, confident, capable and competent learners so that they will have no problems moving on to new adventures and journeys. We also consider all our children and their families, who come through Lupesina, always a part of the Lupesina family. So no matter where they go and what they do, may they always know that Lupesina is a place that they can always come back to, to share their wonderful stories, achievements/successes as well as challenges.
So we hope that this little write-up will provide you with a better understanding as to why we have the name – LUPESINA Aoga Amata Preschool.
